BAE Systems said on 23 November that it has teamed with
the UK government in offering to provide Australia with 5,000 ‘work years’ of
technical design capability if the company is successful in its bid to supply
the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) with next-generation frigates.
BAE Systems said the offer is worth AUD1.5 billion
(USD1.1 billion) and would facilitate the “transfer of data and the digital
design” of the 6,900-tonne Type 26 Global Combat Ship (GCS), which the company
is offering to meet the RAN’s SEA 5000 programme to build nine future frigates.
“The unprecedented transfer of intellectual property will
also include all ship parts, materials, systems, and sub systems used to build
the Type 26 frigate,” said BAE Systems.

Project description
SEA 5000 Phase 1 (Future Frigate) will introduce into
service the next generation of naval surface combatants. The future frigates
will be required to conduct a range of missions, with a particular focus on
anti-submarine warfare. The nine frigates will have sufficient range and
endurance to operate effectively throughout maritime South East Asia and will
be able to be deployed from forward bases, such as in the Middle East. The
frigates will be equipped with a range of offensive and self-protection systems.
The frigates will be built in Adelaide, South Australia and will incorporate
the Australian-developed CEA Phased-Array Radar.
This project is one of a number of maritime projects to
ensure Australia retains a sovereign capability to build and sustain its naval
vessels and implement the Government’s commitment to a continuous build of
